Need for children (and youth) to learn how to give speeches and for them (and others) to give them[edit]

Need for training in public speaking during school/college[edit]

"The youth should be encouraged to train themselves in public speaking while they are still pursuing their studies in schools or colleges."

(On behalf of Shoghi Effendi, 7 December 1931 to an individual believer, published in "Bahá'í News" 64 (July 1932), p. 4; in Youth (compilation), no. 2249)

Man's Speech is the Revealer of His Heart[edit]

"Profitless discussions fatigue and weary a person...

"Man's speech is the revealer of his heart. In whatever world the heart travels, man's conversation will revolve around that center. From his words you can understand in what world he is traveling, whether he is looking upward toward the realm of light or downward to the nether world, whether he is mindful or unaware, whether he is awake or asleep, whether he is alive or dead. For this reason His Holiness Ali says: 'Man is hidden behind his tongue. Out of the abundance of his heart does man speak.'"

(Words of Abdu'l-Bahá, July 25, 1914: Star of the West, Vol. VIII, No. 2, pp. 24-25, in Lights of Guidance, no. 1139)

When gathering in meetings, let conversation be confined to learned subjects and to information on the knowledge of the day[edit]

"Let the loved ones of God, whether young or old, whether male or female, each according to his capabilities, bestir themselves and spare no efforts to acquire the various current branches of knowledge, both spiritual and secular, and of the arts. Whensoever they gather in their meetings let their conversation be confined to learned subjects and to information on the knowledge of the day.

"If they do thus, they will flood the world with the Manifest Light, and change this dusty earth into gardens of the Realm of Glory."

('Abdu'l-Bahá, from a Tablet - translated from the Arabic, Bahá'í Education, no. 27)
