The law must reign and not the individual[edit]

"The Equality of Men--equality before the Law

"The Law must reign, and not the individual; thus will the world become a place of beauty and true brotherhood will be realized. Having attained solidarity, men will have found truth."

(Attributed to 'Abdu'l-Bahá, Paris Talks, p. 132))

The laws of God are not arbitrary; all men are equal before the law including prince or peasant[edit]

"`The Laws of God are not imposition of will, or of power, or pleasure, but the resolutions of truth, reason and justice.'

"All men are equal before the law, which must reign absolutely.

"The object of punishment is not vengeance, but the prevention of crime.

"Kings must rule with wisdom and justice; prince, peer and peasant alike have equal rights to just treatment, there must be no favour shown to individuals. A judge must be no `respecter of persons', but administer the law with strict impartiality in every case brought before him."

(Attributed to 'Abdu'l-Bahá, Paris Talks, p. 154)

(Equality before the law ought to be considered)[edit]

"Let us consider this justly and without bias: let us ask ourselves which one of these basic principles and sound, well-established procedures would fail to satisfy our present needs, or would be incompatible with Persia's best political interests or injurious to the general welfare of her people...Would the setting up of just legislation, in accord with the Divine laws which guarantee the happiness of society and protect the rights of all mankind and are an impregnable proof against assault--would such laws, insuring the integrity of the members of society and their equality before the law, inhibit their prosperity and success?"

('Abdu'l-Bahá, Secret of Divine Civilization, p. 14)
