Supposed possible reasons for Shoghi Effendi's clarification of the story of Lot and his daughters[edit]
- He is clarifying the details of an actual event
- The account is to be seen as an allegory and he is clarifying the moral of the story.
- He is interpreting the story without regard to how true or not it is.
This latter possiblity is reasonably probable since he doesn't offer any additional guidance that might enable us to determine the facts of the story beyond any doubt. He doesn't clarify, for example, that these were real events. This would suggest two things: (a) that he has provided as much information as he can glean from all available sources, and (b) that it doesn't really matter anyway, because it's the spiritual lesson that we're meant to focus on, as in the case of all biblical accounts.
Genesis 1926 also speaks of Lot's wife turning into a pillar of salt. As this is so obviously allegorical, it seems logical that all the accounts are similarly allegorical.
