Only begotten Son of God in the Bible
God gave His only begotten Son[edit]
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son"
Notes[edit]
- Christ is seen by some Christians as greater than Bahá’u’lláh as Christ is the only begotten Son of God. However, Bahá’u’lláh is the Return of Christ and therefore the Return of the Only Begotten Son.
Christ was pre-existent before birth from Mary’s womb (so did not only come into being at conception)[edit]
“Before Abraham was, I am.”
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”
“and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us...as the only son from the Father.”
Note[edit]
- A part of Christ existed before the fetus in Mary’s womb and Christ was therefore unlike an only son who comes into being only at conception. A part of Jesus the Christ existed before the physical body in Mary’s womb. Thus, this Son of God exists in Bahá'u'lláh after Jesus' physical life.
God is a Spirit (therefore Christ’s Sonship must be a spiritual one)[edit]
“God is a Spirit”
‘...that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
- (John 3:6)
Note[edit]
- With Christ's Sonship being spiritual instead of physical, it can also be that this Son of God exists in Bahá'u'lláh after Jesus' physical life.
Christ says He was in heaven while saying on earth that He is the only begotten Son, so He transcends physical reality[edit]
“No man ascended to heaven but He that came down from heaven even the Son of Man which is in heaven.”
“...For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
The Pharisees said that the Messiah must be the lineal son of King David to fulfill Old Testament prophecy “of the fruit of thy body”[edit]
"The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne."
"While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”
"“The son of David,” they replied.
"He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,
"“‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand
"until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
"If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?”"
"While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:
“‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies under your feet.” [Psalm 110:1]’
David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”"
Note[edit]
- If Jesus is not the literal son of Joseph, the prophecy is not literally fulfilled by Virgin Birth, since Mary is not of the lineage from King David. See Virgin birth of Christ in the Bible.
Adam was also a "son of God"[edit]
"the son of Enosh,
"the son of Seth, the son of Adam,
"the son of God."
Note[edit]
- Adam clearly was the first son and clearly also begotten of God ([begotten means “sired” or it means “created”), making Jesus as the “only begotten Son” a title other than literal.
Melchizedek was without father or mother and has no end of life and resembled the Son of God[edit]
"This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever."
Note[edit]
- With Melchizedek resembling the Son of God in not having a beginning of days, then Christ's Reality did not have a beginning.
