Take hold of the Most Holy Book and observe the wondrous precepts (and prosper, being purged of anything unbeseeming)[edit]

"While in prison We have revealed a Book which We have entitled `The Most Holy Book'. We have enacted laws therein and adorned it with the commandments of thy Lord, Who exerciseth authority over all that are in the heavens and on the earth. Say: Take hold of it, O people, and observe that which hath been sent down in it of the wondrous precepts of your Lord, the Forgiving, the Bountiful. It will truly prosper you both in this world and in the next and will purge you of whatsoever ill beseemeth you. He is indeed the Ordainer, the Expounder, the Giver, the Generous, the Gracious, the All-Praised."

(Bahá'u'lláh, Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh, p. 262)

Significance[edit]

Chief depository (along with the Will and Testament of 'Abdu'l-Bahá) enshrining priceless elements of Divine Civilization[edit]

"...the Will and Testament of `Abdu'l-Bahá...together with the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, constitutes the chief depository wherein are enshrined those priceless elements of that Divine Civilization, the establishment of which is the primary mission of the Bahá'í Faith"

(Shoghi Effendi, World Order of Bahá'u'lláh, pp. 3-4)

Newness of its teachings[edit]

"Likewise in the Book of Akdas there are new teachings which are not to be found in any of the past Books or Epistles. When you peruse those teachings you shall comprehend this fact."

('Abdu'l-Bahá, Star of the West, vol. 4, issue 15, pp. 254)

No pronouncements made about punishments in the Aqdas[edit]

"Neither the Master nor the Guardian have made any pronouncements about punishments stipulated in the Aqdas."

(On behalf of Shoghi Effendi, 22 July 1949, in Unfolding Destiny, p. 455)

On translation/publication[edit]

Translation of (before it was translated)[edit]

"Concerning the Book of Akdas: Undoubtedly it must be translated by a scientific committee of translators. The translation of one person is not sufficient."

('Abdu'l-Bahá, Tablets of 'Abdu'l-Bahá, pp. 466-467)

"Thou hast written concerning the Most Holy Book.[Kitab-el-Akdas, by Baha’o’llah.] It is intended that in the future-inshallah[Inshallah, i.e., if it be the will of God—also implies hope or wish.]—means will be provided and with the utmost care it will be translated and sent to those regions."

('Abdu'l-Bahá, Tablets of 'Abdu'l-Bahá, p. 324)

Additional information to be provided upon translation and publication[edit]

"Regarding the Bahá'í funeral service: It is extremely simple, as it consists only of a congregational prayer to be read before burial. This prayer will be made available to the friends when the Aqdas is translated and published."

(Directives from the Guardian, pp. 32-33)

"In regard to the use of ringstones and burial stones, the Guardian leaves this matter at present entirely to the discretion of the believers, and has no objection if your Assembly provides facilities for their purchase by the friends. When the Kitab-i-Aqdas is published the necessary instructions will be given regarding this matter."

(Directives from the Guardian, "RINGSTONES AND BURIAL STONES", no. 175, p. 65)

Due to lack of then inability to enforce laws of the Aqdas, not deemed wise to translate and promulgate (permitted oral translations)[edit]

"As regards to the question you asked me to put to the Guardian about the Aqdas and the House of Justice elections: as most of the laws of the Aqdas cannot at present be enforced anywhere he has not deemed it necessary or wise to translate and promulgate them. You can orally translate them for any of the believers anxious to know exactly what they are."

(On behalf of Shoghi Effendi, 22 July 1949, in Unfolding Destiny, p. 455)

For now, not to use A’rabs (Vowel Points) in publishing of the Aqdas except where necessary to distinguish the word from other just like it[edit]

"No vowel points, as A’rabs, should be published with any part of the text of the Aqdas."

(Dawn of a New Day, p. 94)

"Regarding your question as to the use of A’rabs on the Arabic texts of the Tablets: The Guardian feels that this is a matter which concerns the entire Baha’i world, and requires to be worked out by a highly specialized group of qualified people at some future date. He, therefore wishes you not to print the A’rabs on the Holy Tablets except on rare occasions where it is absolutely necessary in order to distinguish the word from some other word just like it."

(On behalf of Shoghi Effendi, Dawn of a New Day, p. 93)

Was not to be published in Urdu at the time[edit]

"No vowel points, as A’rabs, should be published with any part of the text of the Aqdas. Certain of the Tablets may be translated in Urdu, but not the Aqdas itself, for the reasons mentioned above."

(Dawn of a New Day, p. 94)

The implications of the Aqdas is too far-reaching for this generation to grasp[edit]

"I consider it my duty to warn every beginner in the Faith that the promised glories of the Sovereignty which the Bahá'í teachings foreshadow, can be revealed only in the fulness of time, that the implications of the Aqdas and the Will of Abdu'l-Bahá, as the twin repositories of the constituent elements of that Sovereignty, are too far-reaching for this generation to grasp and fully appreciate. I cannot refrain from appealing to them who stand identified with the Faith to disregard the prevailing notions and the fleeting fashions of the day, and to realize as never before that the exploded theories and the tottering institutions of present-day civilization must needs appear in sharp contrast with those God-given institutions which are destined to arise upon their ruin."

(Shoghi Effendi, World Order of Bahá'u'lláh, p. 16; also in Lights of Guidance, no. 240)

Kitáb-i-Aqdas laws by governing area (of influence)[edit]

"As to the laws themselves, a careful scrutiny discloses that they govern three areas: the individual's relationship to God, physical and spiritual matters which benefit the individual directly, and relations among individuals and between the individual and society."

(Universal House of Justice, in the Introduction to the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, p. 4)

"individual's relationship to God"[edit]

  • Obligatory prayer
  • Fasting

"physical and spiritual matters which benefit the individual directly"[edit]

  • education

"relations among individuals and between the individual and society"[edit]

  • Marriage

Kitáb-i-Aqdas grouping of laws[edit]

"They [the laws] can be grouped under the following headings: prayer and fasting; laws of personal status governing marriage, divorce and inheritance; a range of other laws, ordinances and prohibitions, as well as exhortations; and the abrogation of specific laws and ordinances of previous Dispensations."

(Universal House of Justice, in the Introduction to the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, p. 4)

Kitáb-i-Aqdas by Verse[edit]

Below is a list of references, authoritative and nonauthoritative, which touch upon a verse or verses of the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, Bahá'u'lláh's "Most Holy Book". Some of the references are as yet unlinked (feel free to help link them), and more references can be added (or separate discussion pages can be added for a given verse). These were originally borrowed with permission from the page at [1], but is now undergoing changes.

At least the Promised Day Is Come (and possibly the other unlinked citations) must be checked/changed as they differ from the online, page/paragraph-linkable version.
